remote employees

Remote workers are a trend these days because of the numerous benefits to both employee and employer. The employee gets the freedom to work from any corner of the world without having the need to visit a physical office. On the other hand, the employer need not invest in the office infrastructure which saves his financial resources.

But as we know that every coin has two sides, working remotely has a few drawbacks too. The major one that we are going to discuss here is the security of the company’s data. The reasons why there is a risk to company’s data because of a remote employee are mentioned as below:

  • Usage of open WiFi hotspots to browse the internet which makes their device and data highly prone to cyber attacks.
  • Lacking effective internet security tools such as an antivirus software with anti-phishing and anti-spam features makes it easy for attackers to get into a device.
  • Lack of cyber security guidelines and training leads to non-familiarity with effective security practices.
  • Usage of USB Sticks and Drives that are used by family and friends can lead to loss of confidential data.

Since corporate data breaches are quite common these days, the above-mentioned points tell us the real reasons behind the success of such breaches. It is, therefore, the need of the hour for companies to take effectively monitor remote workers. Let’s take a look:

  • Provide effective cyber security training to your remote employees to make them aware of the online security guidelines.
  • Installing an advanced internet security software on machines used by your employees to ensure that the data is safe from malware and hackers.
  • Ask your remote employees to keep both online and offline backup of their data to easily tackle disasters.
