Safe Browsing – How to Secure Your Web Browser

An average internet user has 2-3 web browsers installed on his or her PC which can be a Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari or a Google Chrome. As web browsers are the main mediums to surf the internet, these are always on the hit list of cyber crooks, who utilize these mediums to intrude into your system or resorts to tactics like browser hijacking. Hence, it is vital to know how to secure your web browser.

Block Third-Party Cookies

Third Party cookies can be exploited by hackers in malicious ways hence it is advisable that you change your browser settings and block third-party cookies. Here, you have to apply your basic intelligence as cookies play a vital role in the usability of the internet, so you cannot afford to block all cookies but only 3rd party cookies.

Use Autocomplete Intelligently

You might have noticed that when you perform any kind of transaction in any 3rd party site, the browser asks whether you want to save your password. If you choose ‘yes’ then next time you can straightway login without entering your password. Autocomplete also works in case of online form submission on certain websites. Here, if you choose 1 or 2 fields, rest gets filled automatically, if you have previously entered the data once.  This process can compromise your security as hackers can fetch the password and other crucial information easily from the browser cache.

Do Not Use Too Much Add-ons

Although Add-ons are considered safe to the maximum extent, it is better to install only those add-ons which you are familiar with. Add-ons can be easily transformed into a malware if the provider wants it to be. Hence, configure your web browser, so that it seeks permission before installing add-ons.

Do Not Disable Content Filters

By enabling content filters, you can block many phishing sites and remain safe. Many popular browsers have a database of malware affected sites, so when you use a content filter, you ideally remain safe from some potential threats.

Use Pop-up Blockers

If your browser has pop-up blocking enabled then you are safe from unwanted ads popping up. These pop-ups are not only annoying but also dangerous as these can be embedded with malware or can land you to a malware infected site.

Apart from the above mentioned 5 steps discussed how to secure your web browser, download anti malware, which provides safety to your device from online threats.
