bad online practices

You might think your data and privacy is protected online, but unfortunately, you are mistaken. The online world today has become the most dangerous place and there are countless cyber threats lurking online.

Almost every day we hear about security breaching incidents happened to some organization, company, business or an individual. But have you ever thought about why a user’s data gets compromised by hackers? This is because despite knowing all the existing and growing threats, users continue with their bad online practices.

Using Outdated Technology

Old versions of OS and other software simply means that attackers can take advantage of the vulnerabilities that are present in the software. It is, therefore, important to install latest security patches and updates that are released by the software vendor.

Disabling Desktop Firewalls

Most of the computer users underestimate the usability of Firewalls that come as default protection system with Operating Systems. However, one should know that a firewall is a great tool in defending against a basic level of malware infections which means it provides protection to your data up to a certain level. So keep your Firewall enabled.

Sharing Passwords

Certainly, you don’t want to wake up one day with your social media account hacked and misused by someone. It is, therefore, crucial not to share your sensitive credentials like usernames, passwords, security questions and answers with anyone.

Ignoring Software Policies

Ignorantly clicking ‘next’ when downloading and installing software on your computer, especially freeware, is a big threat to your safety. Generally, software downloads come with additional tools like adware for which they ask for your permission at the time of installation. You should carefully read the messages to know what data is being accessed by the software on your computer.

Usage of default Logins

Whenever you use a new website or an app, sometimes you skip the registration part and it creates a default user account with a name and password. However, such credentials can be easily guessed by hackers which means you may lose your data. It is, therefore, important to change your credentials after started using an online account.

Not Logging Out

It is a common habit among internet users not to log out of their online accounts. This is quite risky as hackers can take advantage of your user credentials for their own benefit. So make sure to log out every time you browse an online account, especially if it is a public computer.

Not Installing Antivirus

Cyber attacks can hit you anytime. It is not wise to think that you do not need an antivirus software since you’ve never been attacked online. Having an antivirus software ensures that your system remains free from malware and phishing attacks.

Opening links in random emails

You should understand the fact that phishing emails will continue to be more sophisticated and legitimate in order to trap their targets more easily. Clicking on links that come via random email senders can make you lose your sensitive information like netbanking credentials. It is important to check the complete email id of the sender before taking any action. Also, make it a thumb rule that you shall never share your online credentials with anyone over the mail.
